Success at last!

March 27, 2006 by Katie Lee

Yes people, I finally did it – finally made a hat that 1) fits me 2) suits me (sort of). Actually, if I’m being really fussy, it makes me look a little bit egg-headed, but I’m glossing over that part and focusing on the “yay!” part.

It’s just a basic Trebles (US dc) hat with a few rows of double crochet (US sc) with a simple little rosette attached at the side (which I put together on the wrong side to make it lie a little bit flatter). All nice and easy. The only thing that caused me trouble was the pink wool, which is some lovely old Jaegar wool that my very kind friend gave me from her departed Granny’s stash. I thinkit must have been there for some time because it kept coming apart in my hands and eventually I had to double it up. There are a lot of knots hidden underneath, but it’s the outside that counts!

And that’s pretty much all I have to say about that.

    Really nice combination of colours.

re: the string for the baskets, I wonder if some old-fashioned parcel string would provide a stiffer frame. Of course, you could always paint it in PVA glue and leave it to set when you have finished it!

    Hey Mikol,

I’m not too worried about it being a bit floppy. The size I’m doing is going to be very long and narrow, so it will mainly just be used for holding a row of bathroom bottles. I doubt it will have to move much.

But I reckon the glue idea is definitely a goer for another project – I might try it on a little box first to see how it works.

Don’t put PVA anywhere near wet things! my art school experience of getting PVA wet means it can go all sloppy and dirty. just like my paintings.

How about fabric glue? Presumably that’s designed to hold up in the face of moisture? Tell us, oh gluemaster.

I never got round to using fabric glue that much at college. It did make felt go crinkley, from what i can remember from school though. My fashion creations tended to lean towards immense stitching when anything needed joining… As you can probably remember!

Oh my goodness I turn my back for a few mins and look what a wonderfully beautiful thing you have created. I am so proud you look so pretty and the colour suits you too. Very 1920’s you were born to the wrong time…
